Город на юго-западе штата Коннектикут, у пролива Лонг-Айленд [ Long Island Sound]. Находится в 50 км северо-восточнее г. Нью-Йорка. 117 тыс. жителей (2000). Торгово-финансовый центр. Производство медикаментов, электрооборудования, компьютеров, инструмента, изделий из пластмассы, судостроение. Сам город и его северные предместья, расположенные на холмах - жилые пригороды Нью-Йорка, в котором работают многие жители. Среди достопримечательностей - Стэмфордский музей и центр природы с планетарием [Stamford Museum and Nature Center], Детский музей [Children's Museum], Здание первой пресвитерианской церкви [First Presbyterian Church] (1958), имеющее форму рыбины. Основан в 1641. Стал известен в XIX в. как родина многих изобретений и нововведений промышленного характера. Здесь работали такие изобретатели, как С. Ингерсолл [Ingersoll, Simon] и Л. Йель-младший [Yale, Jr., Linus; Yale lock]. Город - с 1893. После второй мировой войны город значительно вырос и стал центром для многих крупных компаний - ныне здесь расположены правления около 25 крупных корпораций, в т.ч. из списка "Форчун 500" [ Fortune 500]. -
