       Слуга молодого лондонского аристократа и его любовница, которую он выдает за сестру, полностью подчиняют хозяина своей воле.
       Печально значение этого фильма, знаменующего собой начало краха в творчестве Лоуси. Это вымученное сочинение на тему вырождения и рабства самоуверенно, старомодно и механически использует определенный набор визуальных элементов – например, зеркала и лестницы. Впервые в творчестве Лоуси риторика подменяет собой оригинальную силу, природную непосредственность, которые чувствовались в его американских картинах, а также во Времени без пощады, Time Without Pity и Цыганке и господине, The Gypsy and the Gentleman. Пинтер со своим вырождающимся миром, двусмысленность которого донельзя банальна, оказал дурное влияние на Лоуси. До такой степени, что в сюжете Слуги можно различить пророческое отражение того упадка, что ждет самого Лоуси под влиянием сценариста. Что олицетворял собою Пинтер для Лоуси? Магию европейской интеллигенции? Средство добиться ее признания? Путь к невозможному обновлению? В любом случае, из его рук режиссер принял отравленный подарок, и сделал это беззаботно и с наслаждением. О Слуге см. специальный выпуск журнала «Isis» (февраль 1964 г.), издаваемого в Оксфорде.
