    Многосерийная телевизионная мелодрама, герои которой решают бесконечные типичные проблемы средней семьи, а фабула развертывается столь медленно, что передача может тянуться годами. Спонсорами первых из них (в 1930-е) были компании-производители мыла. Типичной "мыльной оперой" является "Больница общего типа" ["General Hodpital"], идущая с 1963. В начале 1980-х "мыльные оперы" стали завоевывать на ТВ и вечернее время [ prime time], появилось множество популярных сериалов, список которых возглавляют "Даллас" ["Dallas"], "Династия" ["Dynasty"] и "Фэлкон-Крест" ["Falcon Crest"]. Термин "мыльная опера" ("мыло") стал использоваться для описания дешевых мелодраматических эффектов и приемов в любых областях искусства и жизни, появились производные от него: soapy, Soapland и др.
