As most German city-dwellers live in blocks of flats, many rent a Schrebergarten to provide them with a place where they can grow fruit and flowers and go to relax. The gardens are named after the Leipzig physician D. G. M. Schreber (1808-61), who had the idea of creating playgrounds for children and small gardens for adult part-time gardeners set within a common plot. By law the size of each mini-garden is limited to no more than 400 square metres. Most Schrebergärten have a shed or summer house at one end that often looks like a fairy-tale cottage, and tidy flower beds. The gardeners are members of an association ( Schrebergartenverein) which represents their interests* * *Schrebergarten m etwa allotment (garden)* * *der ≈ allotment (cultivated primarily as a garden)•• Cultural note:A Schrebergarten is an enclosed mini-garden (similar to an allotment) in a large common garden, usually just outside an urban area.
