SAY, SAYEA delicate serge or woollen cloth made of worsted yarns in 4-shaft twill weave. Usually dyed black and used for shirts by certain religious orders, and for aprons by the quakers. Mentioned in 1739 as being made at Sudbury, near Colchester, also in Holland. -
