Город в центральной части штата Нью-Йорк, на р. Мохок [ Mohawk River] и Грузовом канала штата Нью-Йорк [ New York State Barge Canal]. 34,9 тыс. жителей (2000). Промышленный центр, занимающий площадь 194 кв. км. Стал известен как центр производства товаров из меди и латуни, получил прозвище "Медный город" [Copper City]. Производство инструментов. Основан около 1786 на месте форта Станвикс [Fort Stanwix], статус города с 1870. Исторически служил важным транспортным узлом, имел большое стратегическое значение в периоды Войны с французами и индейцами [ French and Indian War] и Войны за независимость [ War of Independence]. В 1768 здесь был заключен договор с "Шестью нациями" [ Six Nations]. В 1817 в Роме началось строительство канала Эри [ Erie Canal] (1817). Среди достопримечательностей - реконструкция поселка 40-х годов XIX в. [Erie Canal Village], на месте форта Булл [Fort Bull]. В пригороде - база ВВС Гриффисс [Griffiss Air Force Base].
