Одной из задач, которая стоит перед разработчиками компьютерных систем является снижение времени загрузки приложений.
Технология кэширования Robson ускоряет загрузку портативного компьютера при помощи NAND-флэш. Robson не только существенно сокращает время запуска программ, но и позволяет понизить энергопотребление ноутбука за счет меньшего количества обращений к жёсткому диску, который, в среднем, потребляет до 20 % энергии. Ускорение загрузки приложений достигается более низким временем доступа к NAND-флэш, нежели к НЖМД.
Первой платформой для ноутбуков, использующей технологию Robson, стала Santa Rosa фирмя Intel.
В разработке данной проблематики Intel не одинока. Известно о такой функции операционной системы Windows Vista как SuperFetch. Её принцип работы заключается в том, что часто используемые системные библиотеки при старте ОС загружаются на флэш-накопитель, выступающий в качестве кэш-буфера. Таким образом, время загрузки программ существенно уменьшается.
Альтернативное решение в виде гибридных запоминающих устройств предложила и компания Samsung. Её решение выглядит как накопитель, использующий одновременно магнитные пластины и флэш-память объёмом до 1 Гбайт, служащую кэшем.
