Prater

  • 1 Prater

Vienna's largest and most popular amusement park. In 1766 Joseph II, the son of Empress Maria Theresa, decreed that der Prater should be open to everyone. Earlier it had been forbidden to enter forests and meadows reserved for imperial hunts. The Prater has old-fashioned swings, skittle alleys, and merry-go-rounds, including the oldest carousel in Europe. A Riesenrad (big wheel) with a diameter of 67 metres was put up for the World Exhibition of 1897 and is a famous Viennese landmark
