Город на востоке штата Айова, порт на р. Миссисипи [ Mississippi River]. 98,3 тыс. жителей (2000), входит в МСА [ MSA] Давенпорт - Молин - Рок-Айленд [Davenport - Moline - Rock Island] (359 тыс. жителей - 2000; см Quad Cities). Административный центр [ county seat] округа Скотт [Scott County]. Торгово-финансовый центр сельскохозяйственного района (кукуруза, соя, свиноводство, разведение крупного рогатого скота). Крупный алюминиевый завод. Производство комбайнов, тракторов, авиадеталей, стиральных машин, цветная металлургия. Железнодорожный узел. На острове Рок-Айленд [Rock Island] - крупный арсенал США. Университет Сент-Амброз [St. Ambrose University] (1882), колледж Мэрикрест [Marycrest College] (1939). В 1808 в этих местах создана фактория [ trading post], а в 1832 был подписан договор с индейцами, завершивший Войну Черного Ястреба [ Black Hawk War] (1832). После открытия земель для поселенцев был основан город, названный по имени одного из первых поселенцев Дж. Давенпорта [Davenport, George]. Подъем экономики начался после строительства первого железнодорожного моста через р. Миссисипи в 1856. Город известен как родина хиропрактики [chiropractic] - в 1895 Д. Д. Палмер [Palmer, D. D.] создал здесь первый колледж хиропрактики [Palmer College of Chiropractic]. Город серьезно пострадал от наводнений в 1993 [Great Floods of 1993].
