Le divorce de trois des quatre enfants de la reine, le désir exprimé par cette dernière que les contribuables britanniques payent les réparations des dégâts causés par l'incendie du château de Windsor en 1991, et la froideur apparente de la famille royale lors du décès de la princesse Diana en 1997, ont fait le plus mauvais effet. D'autre part le statut du prince Charles en tant qu'héritier de la couronne est sujet à controverse en raison de son divorce et de sa liaison avec une femme divorcée - le monarque britannique étant également le chef de l'Église anglicane. -
