1 Microsoft Reader
Lancé en 2000 par la société Microsoft, le Microsoft Reader est un logiciel de lecture permettant la lecture de fichiers de livres numériques au format LIT (abrégé du terme anglais "literature"), lui-même basé sur le format OeB (open ebook). En avril 2000, le Microsoft Reader équipe uniquement le Pocket PC, le PDA (personal digital assistant) lancé à la même date par Microsoft. En août 2000, il est utilisable sous toute plateforme Windows, et donc aussi bien sur ordinateur que sur assistant personnel. Ses caractéristiques sont un affichage utilisant la technologie Cleartype, le choix de la taille des caractères, et la mémorisation des mots-clés pour des recherches ultérieures. Ce logiciel étant téléchargeable gratuitement, Microsoft facture les éditeurs et distributeurs pour l’utilisation de sa technologie de gestion des droits numériques, et touche une commission sur chaque vente de livre numérique. La gestion des droits numériques s’effectue via un système de DRM (digital rights management) dénommé Microsoft DAS Server. Commercialisé en janvier 2001 par la société Microsoft, le Microsoft DAS Server (DAS: digital asset server) est un logiciel serveur payant destiné aux éditeurs et distributeurs pour gérer le conditionnement, la protection et la vente sécurisée de livres numériques au format LIT (abrégé du terme anglais "literature"), le format des fichiers lus par le Microsoft Reader. Ce système de DRM (digital rights management) permet de contrôler l’accès aux livres numériques sous droits, et donc de gérer les droits d’un livre en fonction des consignes données par le gestionnaire des droits, en autorisant ou non par exemple l’impression ou le prêt.
