Между 1820 и 1870 гг. прибыло ок. 300 тыс. евреев из Германии и Центральной Европы, а к концу XIX в. иммигрировали в основном говорящие на идиш евреи из Восточной Европы. Двум разобщённым еврейским общинам понадобились годы, чтобы слиться воедино. Большинство американских евреев живут в крупных городах ( в Нью-Йорке они составляют четверть населения), имеют высокий образовательный уровень, активны в бизнесе, составляют значительный процент лиц свободной профессии, занятых в политике и мире искусства. Наряду с протестантством и католицизмом, иудаизм можно считать одной из трёх важнейших религий в США -
