Федеральное независимое ведомство [ independent agency]; создано в 1965. Состоит из Национального фонда искусств [National Endowment for the Arts], Национального фонда гуманитарных наук [National Endowment for the Humanities], Федерального совета по делам искусств и гуманитарных наук [Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities] и Института музейных служб [Institute of Museum Services]. У каждого фонда - отдельное правление [Council], члены которого назначаются президентом США. Деятельность фондов нацелена на содействие развитию искусства в США и распространение гуманитарных знаний.
