Маркузе Герберт (1898-1979), философ и социолог, один из ведущих представителей Франкфуртской школы, с 1934 г. работал в университетах США. Совместно с Хоркхаймером и Фроммом создал критическую теорию общества. По учению Маркузе между капитализмом и социализмом как между модификациями индустриального общества не существует принципиальной разницы, технический прогресс способствует созданию "тотальной" системы с множеством противоречий, которые не могут быть разрешены в ходе революции. Маркузе призывает отказаться как от капитализма, так и от социализма.
