1 Charing Cross
Charing Cross — это хорошо известная станция лондонского метро, а также железнодорожная станция. Первый Charing Cross (крест) был воздвигнут в старой деревне Чэринг Эдуардом I в честь его жены, королевы Элеоноры. Деревня стояла на полпути между Лондоном и Вестминстером. Крест отмечал то место, где в последний раз останавливался гроб с телом королевы Элеоноры на пути из Harby в Nottinghamshire, где она умерла в 1290 г., в Вестминстер, где её похоронили. Он и сейчас находится там, где стоит статуя короля Карла I, т. е. на южной стороне Трафальгарской площади. Крест был разрушен пуританами в 1647 г. Автором нынешнего готического креста у входа на станцию был Е. М. Бэрри. Крест был воздвигнут вновь только в 1865 г. -
