['mɛdɪˌkeɪd]See:Cultural note: MEDICAID, MEDICARE Negli Stati Uniti si chiama Medicaid l'assistenza medica e ospedaliera sovvenzionata congiuntamente dal governo federale e da quello statale. Ne hanno diritto i cittadini al di sotto dei 65 anni in base a fasce di reddito stabilite dal governo federale; i criteri di valutazione e il tipo di servizi offerti variano da stato a stato e possono comprendere cure non coperte dal Medicare. Il Medicare è l'assistenza sanitaria sovvenzionata dal governo federale che copre parzialmente le spese mediche per i cittadini oltre i 65 anni, per i dializzati e i disabili. Gli assistiti versano un contributo mensile e possono usufruire dei servizi ospedalieri e medici convenzionati. Esiste inoltre un tipo di assistenza privata parallela e supplementare al Medicare, il "Medigap". Chi non è coperto dal Medicare o dal Medicaid paga di tasca propria l'assistenza sanitaria attraverso assicurazioni sanitarie private.
