Nunca fue muy apreciado, aunque recientemente se han empezado a destacar algunos de sus viejos filmes, como Los canones de Navarone (The Guns of Navarone, 1961), proyecto del que se encargo inicialmente el gran Alexander Mac kendrick, o El cabo del terror (Cape Fear, 1962), del que Martin Scorsese hizo el correspondiente remake en 1991. Desde 1962 trabaja, preferentemente, en Estados Unidos.
