    Члены Демократической партии [ Democratic Party] в штатах Юга [ South]. Традиционно занимают консервативные, а иногда и реакционные позиции, особенно по вопросам внутренней политики. После окончания Гражданской войны [ Civil War] Демократическая партия, поддержавшая Конфедерацию [ Confederate States of America], практически оказалась вне закона и возродилась только после окончательного вывода войск северян из последних южных штатов, где они находились, - Луизианы, Южной Каролины и Флориды. Традиционно южные демократы блокировались в Конгрессе с правым крылом республиканцев и часто выступали против законопроектов, вносимых президентами-демократами. Вплоть до выборов 1994, когда в большинстве южных штатов победили республиканцы, избиратели в южных штатах голосовали за представителей Демократической партии, то есть за южных демократов
