Исключительно хоббитское слово (не из всеобщего), означающее "нора"; его следует оставить без изменений. Именно такую форму могло бы принять древнеанглийское слово "smygel" ("нора") если бы оно сохранилось до наших дней. Тот же корень встречается в настоящем имени Голлума (Gollum), Sméagol. См. приложение F."Соответственно, 'smial' (или 'smile'), 'нора' могло бы вести своё происхождение от smygel, что удачно представляет взаимосвязь хоббитского 'trân' и роханского 'trahan'. Sméagol и Déagol – созданные подобным же образом искусственные эквиваленты к подлинным Trahald ("роющий нору, ввинчивающийся вглубь") и Nahald ("тайный"), как они звучали на северных языках."
