1 Chief Justice of the United States
Назначается Президентом [ President, U.S.] с согласия Сената [ Senate, U.S.] пожизненно в соответствии со статьей III, разделом 1 [Article III, Section 1] Конституции [ Constitution, U.S.]. Роль председательствующего на заседаниях суда - одна из важнейших. Верховный судья ставит дело на обсуждение, контролирует ход дискуссии, предписывает подготовку решения. Вначале он представляет свое суждение о деле, затем спрашивает мнение других членов суда по старшинству, после чего происходит голосование. Если большинство поддерживает верховного судью, он формально назначает ответственного за составление решения; если он в меньшинстве, то задание дает старший судья из большинства. В истории США с 1789 на этом посту сменилось 14 человек. В настоящее время в Верховном суде пятнадцатый председатель У.
