С 1857 в "Атлантик мансли" [ Atlantic Monthly] выходят его эссе под общим названием "Самодержец утреннего застолья" ["The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table"], содержавшие дерзкие выпады против религиозных устоев. В последний период творчества писал мемуары, создал ряд "медицинских романов", опубликовал биографии Дж. Мотли [ Motley, John Lothrop] и Р. У.
