1 Back
The underside of a cloth as woven in the loom. Some cloths are woven face down for ease in weaving; as, for instance, warp satins, in which the lift is 4 / 1, by weaving face down, only one thread is lifted and four remain down. The pattern in a fancy cloth will always indicate the face, and so will the finish. -
2 Back Plate
A smooth metal sheet at the back of a carding machine, which encases the cylinder surface from the licker-in to the flats. -
3 Back Rail
Another name for the Back rest of the loom. -
4 Back Rest
The cross rail or roller at the back of the loom over which the warp threads pass to the healds and reeds. The American manufacturers call this rail " Slip-roll." -
5 Back-Filled Finish
A system of finishing cloths without the finish appearing on the face. This is done on the " back-filling " mangle, which lays the starch or other finish on one side only and protects the other side. 6 Back Beams
The beams prepared by the beaming frame to be used in the creel of the slasher sizing machine. Each beam will have about 500 threads, and from three or four to six or more will be used to make a weaver's beam. The length of yarn on a beam varies from 10,000 to 25,000 yards, according to the counts of yarn (see Slasher Sizing Machine) -
7 Back Cloth
An unbleached all-cotton plain cloth used as a reinforcing cloth for calico printing to support the fabric being printed. Made in many qualities from 72 X 72, 36/36, to high reeds and picks. -
8 back duty
Fintax relating to a past period that has not been paid due to the taxpayer’s failure to disclose relevant information through negligence or fraud. If back duty is found to be payable, the relevant authorities may instigate an investigation and penalties or interest may be charged on the amount. -
9 back-to-back loan
Finan arrangement in which two companies in different countries borrow offsetting amounts in each other’s currency and each repays it at a specified future date in its domestic currency. Such a loan, often between a company and its foreign subsidiary, eliminates the risk of loss from exchange rate fluctuations. -
10 back-end loading
Finthe practice of charging a redemption fee or deferred sales charge if the holder of an investment decides to sell it. This is used as a discouragement to selling. -

14 Satin Back Coating
A worsted fabric, made on the fancy twill basis with a satin back. The coarser warp yarn at the back gives weight and yet allows a fine face weave. This cloth is made 69-in. wide to give 58-in. finished. Warped 2 face, 1 back. The yarns are all worsted 2/56's face, 2/36's back warps and single 24's weft, 132 ends and 92 picks per inch (face 88, back 44).Dictionary of the English textile terms > Satin Back Coating

15 Balk Back
A woollen fabric which, after finishing, has a soft back. Formed by leaving the back of the fabric uncut in the finishing operation. -
16 Calico-Back
A plain weave back, also known as " tabby-back." The term indicates that the threads are lifted one up, one down. -
17 Fancy Back
A general term used for coatings that are made with a different coloured pattern for the back. The face and back are distinct in design and colour. -
18 Cotton Back Satins
A super lining fabric, made from a silk warp and combed Egyptian cotton weft, in the 8-shaft satin weave, giving a warp face of silk and a weft back of cotton. This refers to the back of a glove, embellished with fancy embroidery or pointings. The name is commonly applied to Bordier points. -
