A colourless oily liquid obtained from coal tar by the reduction of nitrobenzene by means of iron and hydrochloric acid. It is the basis of many important dyes in the textile industries. Perhaps the most important colour is Aniline black, which is the fastest black known; it resists exposure to air and light and is quite fast to washing and soaping. -
