Калифорния, на Лонг-Айленд [ Long Island] за 21 час 20 мин. 20-21 мая 1927 впервые в мире осуществил беспосадочный перелет через Атлантику (за 33,5 часа) на одноместном моноплане "Дух Сент-Луиса" [The Spirit of St. Louis], построенном на средства жителей города. В Нью-Йорке его встретили как национального героя "серпантинным парадом" [ ticker-tape parade], он был награжден Почетной медалью Конгресса [ Congressional Medal of Honor]. В 1932 национальной сенсацией стало похищение, а затем убийство его полуторагодовалого сына [ Lindbergh kidnapping case]. Линдберг был активным изоляционистом [ Isolationism], одним из основателей Комитета "Америка прежде всего" [ America First Committee], занимал пронацистские позиции (в 1938 принял награду от Гитлера). В 1940-41 активно выступал против участия США во второй мировой войне, против политики администрации Ф. Д. Рузвельта [ Roosevelt, Franklin Delano (FDR)], вышел в отставку в чине полковника.
