Como locución adjetiva, se aplica a la máxima calificación académica, encareciendo aún más su distinción: "Su hermano Jairo, sobresaliente cum laude en el doctorado" (Delibes Madera [Esp. 1987]). Como locución adverbial, se usa con verbos relacionados con la obtención de algún grado académico, como graduarse, licenciarse, doctorarse, calificar, etc.: " La calificaron cum laude" (LTena Renglones [Esp. 1979]). Se emplea también como sustantivo masculino: " Su tesis había obtenido el cum laude" (LTena Renglones [Esp. 1979]). No es correcta la forma * cum laudem. Es invariable en plural: los cum laude.
