       Nacido en Dinamarca, Blangsted dirige sus dos unicas peliculas en 1937. Nunca pasara a la historia por ellas, pero si por haber sido el responsable del montaje de una de las maximas expresiones del western, Rio Bravo (Howard Hawks, 1959). Es esta, la de montador, su verdadera actividad profesional dentro del cine; en ella trabajo entre 1944 y 1975, tanto en Estados Unidos como en el Reino Unido, y tambien para television.

  • 17 Girard, Bernard

    1918-1997
       Guionista y realizador de cine y, sobre todo, de television desde comienzos de los anos 50. Aunque su vulgar modo de hacer televisivo infecta la estetica de sus largometrajes, hay que reconocer que el primero de sus westerns es un filme muy atractivo, lo mismo que alguna otra de sus peliculas, ajenas al genero. Entre estas, por razones circunstanciales, hay que recordar The Party Crashers (1958), que fue la ultima pelicula que interpretaron Bobby Driscoll, antiguo nino prodigio del cine, muerto por sobredosis de droga en 1968, y Frances Farmer, destruida por el alcohol y la enfermedad mental, que murio en 1970 de un cancer. De Bobby Driscoll siempre se recordara su interpretacion en La isla del tesoro (Treasure Island, Byron Haskin, 1950), cuando contaba solo 13 anos de edad. De Frances Farmer, mas que una interpretacion concreta hay que citar la magnifica pelicula biografica Frances, dirigida por Graeme Clifford en 1982, e interpretada por una insuperable Jessica Lange.

    1933
       William A. Graham es un director de episodios de series de television y telefilmes que, alguna que otra vez, realiza una pelicula destinada a las pantallas de las salas de cine. En el terreno del western lo hace tres veces, obteniendo productos hibridos, carentes de las senas de identidad mas caracteristicas del genero. Desde este punto de vista, Graham carece de la menor relevancia para la historia del western. Esta en activo desde 1951.

    1886-1982
       Henry King, hermano mayor de Louis King, es un personaje mitico en el mundo del Hollywood clasico. Nacido en Christianburg, Virginia, fue actor de teatro antes de entrar en el cine. Director de mas de cien peliculas entre mudas y sonoras, actor desde mitad de la segunda decada del siglo XX, fue capaz de dirigir dramas, historias de amor, comedias, peliculas de aventuras y, desde luego, un selecto punado de westerns. De sus casi 120 filmes, mas de la mitad son mudos y entre ellos hay que destacar un interesante western, Flor del desierto (The Win ning of Barbara Worth, 1926), con Ronald Colman. No demasiado creativo tal vez, destaca por la firmeza de sus puestas en escena, a las que dotaba de todas las virtudes, y de no pocos de los defectos inherentes a los guiones que manejaba. A partir de la realizacion de Jesse James su filmografia mejora notablemente, incluyendo algunos filmes de aventuras y peliculas de notable intensidad dramatica, co mo El cisne negro (The Black Swan, 1942), Captain from Castile (1947), La colina del adios (Love Is a Many Splen dored Thing, 1955) y la que seria su ultima realizacion, Suave es la noche (Tender Is the Night, 1962), basada en la novela de Scott Fitzge rald. Sus cuatro westerns son de autentica antologia y, paradojicamente, muy distintos unos de otros. Destaca el uso que hace, en los dos ultimos, del actor Gregory Peck. Henry King fue uno de los 36 fundadores de la Academia de las Ciencias y Artes Cinematograficas.

    1898-1982
       De origen ruso, llega a America siendo aun un nino y es en el nuevo continente donde se inicia profesionalmente como actor de cine mudo. Mas tarde trabajara como guionista y, por fin, como realizador. En la Republic realizara sus mejores filmes de aventuras, como The Fighting Seabees (1944), o La venganza del bergantin (Wake of the Red Witch, 1948). Ya en la Paramount continua haciendo el tipo de peliculas que mas le agrada, y para las que esta mas dotado, como La mansion de Sangaree (Sangaree, 1953), o Jibaro (Jivaro (1953). Nada especialmente favorable puede decirse de el como realizador, ni de sus peliculas, pero tambien es cierto que, en su terreno, consigue productos muy eficaces. Sus westerns, de factura correcta, son acaso en exceso convencionales.
