11 Chaban-Delmas, Jacques
(1915-2000)Conservative prime minister of France, 1969 - 1972. Chaban Delmas was a wartime leader in the French Resistance movement, who entered politics in the days of the Fourth Republic. At this time, he was a Radical and a Social Republican. He was a minister in the centre-left coalition government of Pierre Mendès-France in 1954-55 and minister of Defence in the Radical Socialist Gaillard government 1957-8. He then rallied to the Gaullist movement in 1958, though was mistrusted by many leading Gaullists, and did not serve as minister during the De Gaulle presidencies, though was elected leader of the National Assembly. He was appointed prime minister by Georges Pompidou. As well as his national duties, Chaban-Delmas was also Mayor of Bordeaux for 48 years, from 1947 to 1995, and also Député for the city - a classic example of cumul des mandats.Dictionnaire Français-Anglais. Agreement, signed in 1962, putting an end to the Algerian war. The agreement, signed between the French government and the Algerian National Liberation Front, led to Algerian independence, while giving France the right to maintain a certain strategic presence in the country for 15 years. France's withdrawal from Algeria, after 130 years of colonial domination, was the subject of bitter argument in France, and France narrowly escaped falling into civil war over the issue. The Algerian crisis lasted from 1954 to 1962, and led in 1958 to the collapse of the Fourth Republic, and the establishment of the Fifth Republic under General de Gaulle. It was de Gaulle who masterminded the package that achieved consensus at the Evian talks. In this time, he acquired the reputation of a reformer, pushing through major reforms of the education system and the retirement system. born 1954.Candidate of the French Socialist Party for the 2012 presidential election. He defeated runner-up Martine Aubry in the second round of an unofficial "primary" for the designation of the socialist candidate.French Socialist politician. A graduate of HEC business school and of theENA school of administration, Hollande worked at the Cour des Comptesbefore becoming elected as a député for the Corrèze - the same department as Jacques Chirac - in 1988. In 1997 he was elected first secretary of the Socialist Party, a most he held until 2008. 15 CERN
L’acronyme CERN signifie à l’origine "Conseil européen pour la recherche nucléaire". Le CERN devient ensuite l’Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire. Basé près de Genève (Suisse), le CERN est fondé en septembre 1954 par 12 Etats européens. Il devient le plus grand laboratoire mondial de physique des particules. Ses 3.000 salariés "explorent ce dont la matière est faite et quelles forces assurent sa cohésion". Ils tentent par exemple de déchiffrer les origines de l’univers ou de percer les mystères du Big Bang ou de l’antimatière. Ils mettent aussi au point les scanners médicaux utilisés dans le diagnostic du cancer ou encore les techniques utilisées pour produire des microprocesseurs. Le CERN est également le berceau du web. En 1989, un de ses chercheurs, Tim Berners-Lee, met au point le World Wide Web pour simplifier, accélérer et améliorer le partage d’informations entre ses collègues, répartis aux quatre coins du monde. Le web devient ensuite le réseau mondial que l’on sait. Financé par les fonds publics de 20 états membres, le CERN fête en 2004 son cinquantième anniversaire, et sert plus que jamais de plaque tournante pour la recherche, avec un réseau de 6.500 chercheurs de 80 nationalités différentes appartenant à 500 universités.Voir aussi: Berners-Lee, Tim, web.
