5 ka mate
This Ngeri style Haka is a Maori challenge song credited to Te Rauparaha. Today it is performed before sporting events and other occasions by men. In fact the All Black rendition of Ka Mate may have undergone quite a few changes along the way to make it more impressive or appropriate to the game of rugby. (including a war-like final high jump!)English translation is in italicsKa mate ! Ka mate !I die ! I die !Ka ora ! Ka ora !I live ! I live !Ka mate ! Ka mate !I die ! I die !Ka ora ! Ka ora !I live ! Each of the narrow pinnae or "leaves" on this frond will develop spores, contained in structures called sporangia, which are in turn grouped in clusters called sori along the underneath side of the pinnae. The edge of the pinnae rolls inwards to protect the developing sori.FOOD: Young fronds wrer cooked and eaten as greens (Best 1903, 1908) Sometimes used to cover baskets of eels or kokopu when cooking. -
12 Kitekite falls
<KITEKITE.JPG">Near Piha on Auckland's West CoastThe Kitekite Track leads to the impressive three-tiered Kitekite Falls - the Knutzen Track leads off this (named after the early manager of the Piha Mill) taking a route to the south of the Kitekite Stream to reach the falls. The return route is by the north side. Off this track a steep track can take you to the top of the falls, where there are small cold pools for taking a dip and notches in the rocks where the Glen Esk Dam was located. The first attempt to drive logs down the falls resulted in their destruction on the rocks below and the dam was thereafter only used to flush the logs waiting in the stream below down to the mill. Tracks at the top of the falls lead inland through the ranges to various outlets on the West Coast Road. -

17 Roroi
Recipe: Take some very fresh kumara, straight from the garden, if possible. Wash thoroughly, then grate. Place in a shallow baking dish and sprinkle with sugar. Over the top of the grated kumara place some broad slices of kumara. This will keep the mixture from hardening in the oven. Bake for an hour at 180C. When hot this is similar to a steamed pudding, and may be served with cream, or custard. when cold it may be sliced like bread, and spread with butter. -
18 wheki
dicksonia squarrosa (nz tree fern/Rough Tree Fern/ brown tree fern)<DICKSONIA squarrosa.jpg">Grows to 7mSlender trunk covered with black peg-like fallen fronds. No skirt of dead fronds. Very common.<WHEKI.JPG">The fronds are up to 3 m long and they are very harsh. The stems on the fronds are also very rough. The top side of the fronds are dark green while underneath they are paler. Dead leaves are an orange-brown colour. Technically Ponga is the Maori word for all tree ferns, but it is most commonly applied to the d.squarrosa, as this is the fern from which we get ponga logs. The fronds are smaller than the Mamaku, but have a similar horizontal arching habit, which gives an umbrella like appearance. This tree fern produces new fronds right throughout the year, so it always has a lush, healthy look.<DICKSONIA2 squarrosa.jpg"> -
