  • 9 Ngati Mutunga

Ngati Mutunga is one of the eight generally recognised iwi (tribes) of Taranaki. The territory of Ngati Mutunga is located in North Taranaki. Our rohe was once densely populated with many kainga and pa. A number of factors such as intertribal warfare and loss of land led to a decline in the population identifying as Ngati Mutunga during the nineteenth century. Today our sole remaining marae is located in Urenui, a small seaside village located approximately 32 km north of New Plymouth and 20 km north of Waitara. The 2001 Census gives the total Ngati Mutunga population as approximately 3,000 members spread all over New Zealand, with the main concentrations being located within Taranaki, Wellington and Christchurch. The majority of Ngati Mutunga iwi members live outside Taranaki.
