ἄστυ, τό, die Stadt; gen. ἄστεος u. ἄστεως; letzteres Attisch, durch das Metrum gesichert Eur. Or. 751 Phoen. 856. Ueberall; Hom. oft, z. B. ἄστυ Iliad. 3, 116, ἄστεος z. B. 3. 140, ἄστεϊ Od. 8. 525, ἄστεα z. B. Od. 1, 3; πόλιν καὶ ἄστυ Iliad. 17, 144, entw. auf Homerische Art παραλλήλως, so daß Beides dasselbe, oder eines von Beiden die Burg; ἄστυ Ἰλίου Iliad. 21, 128, ἄστυ Ζελείης 4, 103; Λήμνου τε καὶ Ἴμβρου ἄστυ 14, 281. Bei den Attikern vorzugsweise Athen, gew. ohne Artikel, s. Stallb. Phaedr. 227 b, nicht bloß im Ggstz des Landes, sondern auch des Piräeus, Lycurg. 18, wo ἄστυ τῆς πόλεως darauf hinweis't, daß πόλις auch den durch die langen Mauern mit eingeschlossenen Pi räeus einbegreift.

Ζζ, [full] ζῆτα (q.v.), τό, indecl., seventh (later sixth) letter of Gr. alphabet (cf. IG14.2420): as numeral ζA = ἑπτά and ἕβδομος (σ, i.e. ϝϝαῦ, the digamma, being retained to represent ἕξ, ἕκτος), but [num] ζ' = 7,000.0-0Zeta, being a double consonant (pronounced either as zd or as dz acc. to dialect and date), made a short vowel at the end of the foregoing syllable long by position; exc. before pr. names, which could not otherwise come into the hexam.,ἄστῠ Ζελείης Il.4.103
