10 अनुप्रासः _anuprāsḥ
अनुप्रासः [अनुगतः रसाद्यनुगुणं प्रकृष्टमासं वर्णन्यासं समवर्ण- रचनां समवर्णोच्चारणं वा] Alliteration, repetition of similar letters, syllables or sounds; वर्णसाम्यमनुप्रासः K. P.9; (स्वरवैसादृश्ये$पि व्यञ्जनसदृशत्वं वर्णसाम्यं ससाद्यानुगतः प्रकृष्टो न्यासः; अनुप्रासः शब्दसाम्यं वैषम्ये$पि स्वरस्य यत् S. D.633.) अनुप्रास is of 5 kinds; (a) छेक˚ or single alliteration; बकुलगन्धा- नन्धीकुर्वन्, कावेरीवारिपावनः पवनः, मूर्ध्नामुद्वृत्तकृत्ताविरलगरल &c. K. P.7. (b) वृत्ति˚ or harmonious. उदा°ree उन्मीलन्मधुगन्ध- लुब्धमधुपव्याधूतचूताङ्कुरक्रीडत्कोकिलकाकलीकलकलैरुद्गीर्णकर्णज्वराः । नीयन्ते पथिकैः कथंकथमपि ध्यानावधानक्षणप्राप्तप्राणसमासमागमरसोल्ला- सैरमी वासराः ॥ (c) श्रुति˚ or melodious. उदा˚ दृशा दग्धं मनसिजं जीवयन्ति दृशैव याः । विरूपाक्षस्य जयिनीस्ताः स्तुमो वामलोचनाः ॥ (d) अन्त्य˚ or final; as मन्दं हसन्तः पुलकं वहन्तः. 11 अष्टक _aṣṭaka
अष्टक a. [अष्ट परिमाणमस्य कन्] Consisting of 8 parts eight-fold; क्रोधजो$पि गणो$ष्टकः Ms.7.48.-कः 1 [अष्टकं (पाणिनेः), विदन्ति अधीयते वा इत्यष्टकाः सूत्राच्च कोपधात् P.IV.2.65. Sk.] One who studies or is acquainted with the eight Adhyāyās of Pāṇini's grammar.-2 N. of a son of Viśvāmitra (author of the hymn Rv.1.14.)-का [अश्नन्ति पितरो$स्यां तिथौ अश्-तकन् Uṇ.3.148]1 A collection of three days (7th, 8th, and 9th) beginning from the seventh day after the full moon.-2 the 8th day of three months on which the Manes are to bo propitiated.-3 A Śrāddha to be performed on the above days; worship of the Manes on certein days; तस्य व्रातस्य यो$स्य द्वितीयो$- पानः साष्टका Av.15.16.2; अष्टकापितृदैवत्यमित्ययं प्रसृतो जनः Rām.2.18.14.-4 The 8th day of a month; Ms.4.113-4.-कम् 1 A whole consisting of 8 parts.-2 The 8 chapters of Pāṇinī's Sūtras; (अष्टावध्यायाः परिमाणमस्य इत्यष्टकम्; पाणिनेः सूत्रम् Sk.).-3 The study of the Sūtras.-4 A division of the Ṛig- veda (it being divided into 8 Aṣṭakas or 1 Ma- ṇḍalas).-5 Any group of eight; as वानराष्टकम्, तारा- ष्टकम्, मङ्गलाष्टकम् &c. गङ्गाष्टकं पठति यः प्रयतः प्रभाते वाल्मीकिना विरचितं शुभदं मनुष्यः-6 The number eight.-Comp. -अङ्गः, -ङ्गम् a kind of board or cloth for playing with dice on (having eight divisions). -
12 अहल्य _ahalya
अहल्य a.1 Unploughed.-2 Not arable.-ल्यः N. of a country.-ल्या N. of the wife of Gautama [According to the Rāmāyana she was the first woman created by Brahmā, who gave her to Gautama. She was seduced by Indra who assumed the form of her husband and so deceived her, or, according to another version, she knew the god and was flattered by the great God's condescension. There is another story which states that Indra secured the assistance of the moon who, assuming the form of a cock, crowed at mid-night. This roused Gautama to his morning devotions, and Indra went in and took his place. Gautama, when he knew of her seduction expelled her from his hermitage and cursed her to be a stone and become invisible till she should be touched by the feet of Dāśarathi Rāma which would restore her to her former shape. Rāma afterwards delivered her from her wretched state and she was reconciled to her husband. Ahalyā is one of the five very chaste and pure women whose names every one is recommend- ed to repeat in the morning; अहल्या द्रौपदी सीता तारा मन्दोदरी तथा । पञ्चकं ना स्मरेन्नित्यं महापातकनाशनम् ॥ Kumārila Bhaṭṭa explains the seduction of Ahalyā as Indra's (the sun's) carrying away the shades of night, Aha- lyā signifying night.] For a very succinct account, see also Mv.1.-2 N. of a sea.-Comp. -ईश्वरतीर्थः N. of a तीर्थ.-जारः Indra.-नन्दनः the sage Śatānanda, son of Ahalyā.-ह्रदः N. of a Tīrtha near the hermitage of Gautama. -

[He is said to have devoured thousands of beings including sages and heavenly nymphs, and the gods were anxiously waiting for an opportunity to retaliate upon the powerful demon. After Brahmā had inflicted on him a curse for the humiliation to which he subjected Indra and his elephant Airāvata, Kumbhakarṇa began to practise the most rigid austerities. Brahmā was pleased and was about to grant him a boon, when the gods requested Sarasvatī to sit on his tongue and to pervert it. Accordingly when he went to the god, instead of asking Indrapada he asked Nidrāpada which was readily granted. It is said that he slept for six months at a time, and, when roused, was awake for only one day. When Lankā was besieged by the monkey-troops of Rāma, Ravāṇa with great difficulty roused Kumbhakarṇa, desirous of availing himself of his gigantic strength. After having drunk 2 jars of liquor, he took Sugrīva prisoner, besides devouring thousands of monkeys.
