שוי, שָׁרָה(b. h.) (to join, combine, 1) (to be even, equal, alike. M. Kat. 9b (ref. to Prov. 3:15) כל חפצך … הא חפצי שמים יִשְׁווּ בה all thy affairs are not of equal value with her (the Torah), but heavens affairs (pious deeds) are of equal value with her (you may interrupt study for pious works); וכתיב … חפצי שמים לא ישוו בה but it is also written (ib. 8:11), ‘and all affairs (which implies that) even heavens affairs are not equal to her! Y.Peah 1, 15d bot. חפציך וחפצי לא ישוו בה I sent thee something with which thy affairs and my affairs cannot compare; a. e.Denom. שָׁוֶה, q. v. 2) (denom. of שָׁוֶה) a) to be of value. שָׂרָה(b. h.) 1) princess, v. שַׂר. 2) pr. n. f. Sarah, a) wife of Abraham. Ber.13a ש׳ היא שרי Sarah and Sarai have the same meaning. Snh.39b עדין … יופי של ש׳ she had not yet attained to half the beauty of Sarah. Gen. R. s. 39 אברהם … וש׳וכ׳ Abraham convented the men, and Sarah the women; a. v. fr.b) Gitt.34b ופורתא ש׳, v. פֹּורְתָּא.

שרי, שָׁרָהI (b. h. root in מִשְׁרָה) to dissolve, soak, steep. Naz.VI, 1 ש׳ פתו בייןוכ׳ if he (the Nazirite) steeped his bread in wine, and there is enough in both together to make up the size of an olive; Pes.44b. Naz.37a אם ש׳ ענביו במיםוכ׳ if he steeped grapes in water, and a taste of wine remained in it. Pes.II, 7 אין שוֹרִיןוכ׳ you dare not soak bran for chickens (on the Passover); ib. האשה לא תִשְׁרֶהוכ׳ a woman must not soak bran to take with her to the bathhouse. Sabb.I, 5 אין שורין … כדי שיִשּׁוֹרוּוכ׳ you must not lay in ink-materials or dyes … unless they can be dissolved (or soaked through) before the Sabbath sets in. Eduy. I, 8; a. fr. R. s. 17, end אדם … מיד היא נִשְׁרֵית … אינו נִשְׁרֶה man is made out of earth, when you put a drop of water on it, it is at once dissolved (soft), but woman is made of a bone, which is not dissolved, even if you let it lie in water for many days. חָסַדII (b. h.; cmp. חסר, חסף); Pi. חִסֵּד, חִשֵּׂד ( to scrape off, (cmp. גדף, גרף) to jeer, scoff at, to shame. Ruth R. to IV, 8 שחִסְּדָן ברבים (or שחֲסָדָן; ed. Wil. שחשדן) he scoffed at them publicly (speaking ironically, with ref. to 2 Chr. 13:8); Y.Yeb.XVII, beg.15c שחִישֵּׂדוכ׳ he jeered at Jeroboam; Gen. R. s. 65; ib. s. 73 שחּסדם ed. Wil. (oth. שחש׳); Lev. R. s. 33; Midr. Sam. ch. 18 שחִיסְּדָן; Yalk. Kings 205 ומְחַשֵּׂד.Ex. R. s. 30 (ref. to Ex. 2:14) שחִיסְּדוּוכ׳ when Dathan and Abiram sneered at him. Ib. בזה שחִיסַּדְתֶּם אותווכ׳ with the very word ( שופט) with which you sneered at him, I shall give him the rulership ( משפטים). Pesik.
