    пластиковая карточка, внешне похожая на кредитную карточку (credit card), но с встроенным обычно 8-разрядным микропроцессором и памятью (местоположение МП на лицевой стороне карточки определено стандартом ISO 7816-1). В ней могут храниться личные сведения, фотография владельца, его биометрические данные, пароли, ключи доступа и другая значимая информация (sensitive information). На поверхности карточки печатается фамилия её владельца, его фотография и другие данные. Смарт-карты используются для идентификации личности, в медицинских и платёжных системах. Для чтения смарт-карт применяются специальные считывающие устройства (smart card reader). Существует разновидность смарт-карт - бесконтактные микропроцессорные карточки (contactless smart card). Смарт-карты изобрели немецкие инженеры Юрген Детлофф (J. Dethloff) и Хельмут Греттрупп (Н. Gröuttrupp) в 1967-1968 гг. Заявки на патенты в этой области позже были поданы в разных странах и другими людьми. Термин ввёл французский публицист Рой Брайт (R. Bright).
