Одна из двух основных политических партий США, возникшая в 1854 на базе неудовлетворенности законопроектом "Канзас-Небраска" [ Kansas-Nebraska Act], широко распространившейся среди вигов [ Whigs] и демократов Севера США. В первые годы выражала интересы промышленно-торгового капитала Севера. Платформа республиканцев в ходе предвыборной кампании 1860 включала, помимо запрета на распространение рабства на территории северных штатов, требование введения высокого защитного тарифа на импортируемую продукцию, бесплатной раздачи гомстедов [ homestead] поселенцам и др. За 160 лет ее существования кандидаты от Республиканской партии на пост президента США одерживали победу в 22-х президентских избирательных кампаниях и занимали Белый дом [ White House] в общей сложности в течение 85 лет. На выборах 1994 впервые за много лет завоевала большинство в обеих палатах Конгресса (53 места из 100 в Сенате и 230 из 435 в Палате представителей). Республиканская партия. Основана в 1854, является в наст. время одной из двух крупнейших партий США. Первоначально состояла преимущественно из северян, вышедших из двух основных партий того времени — демократов и вигов, а тж. части членов существовавшей до этого партии «ничего не знающих» [Know-Nothings]. На первых порах членов Респ. партии объединяло стремление не допустить распространения рабства. Первым кандидатом в президенты от этой партии, одержавшим победу в 1860, был Авраам Линкольн. Опирается на поддержку крупных предпринимателей, банкиров, фермеров, жителей небольших городов и посёлков, части мелких собственниковСША.
