Рудный материал, полученный из мелкой (пылевидной) руды или из тонкоизмельченных концентратов в виде шарообразных гранул диаметром от 2—3 до 30 мм (обычно 10—15 мм). Железорудные окатыши применяются главным образом в доменной плавке. В отличие от агломерата окатыши способны переносить транспортировку с перегрузками и длительное хранение без заметного разрушения или образования мелочи. По соотношению содержания основных и кислых пород (основности) окатыши разделяют на офлюсованные (частично или полностью) и неофлюсованные (окисленные). Производство окисленных окатышей включает окомкование шихты (получение сырых окатышей) в барабанных, тарельчатых или чашевых окомкователях и упрочнение их обжигом или безобжигными методами. В зависимости от используемых добавок различают железорудные, железомарганцевые, железоникелевые, рудо-угольные, доломитизированные, магнезиальные и др. окатыши. Железорудные окатыши, в которых часть оксидов железа (до 95 %) восстановлена до металла, называют металлизованными (используются главным образом в электросталеплавильных печах для получения качественной стали). Металлизованные окатыши получают восстановлением оксидированных окатышей в специальных агрегатах с применением твердого или газообразного восстановителя или восстановительным обжигом непосредственно на обжиговых машинах.
