This word in French means " skin," and is a very common one for French-made fabrics for modern dress goods. It is used in connection with such words as swan, mouse, sheep, peach, etc. Usually the fabrics are finished with a fine downy nap produced by the emerising process. -

4 Peau De Cygne
A very fine silk fabric in a close weave and fine counts. Manufactured and finished in a glossy style by French makers. Made 8-shaft weave as illustrated, the weft crosses two ends and bright silk is used. The weft showing on the surface gives the crepe effect. An inferior Peau de Cygne is made with the 5-shaft warp satin weave with the weft floating over one end only at each intersection. The cloth made with this weave is really Messaline. -

7 Peau D'ange
A dress fabric of 12-shaft satin weave giving a smooth, compact face. Woven about 352 ends and 92 picks per inch of rayon warp and schappe silk weft. The counts are 75 denier warp, 2/200's schappe weft. There are 4 ends per dent. Weight about 14-lb., 36-in., 50 yards. The cloth is of the suede type and has little lustre. -

An imitation sheepskin fabric made in twill weave of wool yarns. It has a curled pile of worsted. Used for ladies' cloaks. -

A French silk and cotton pile fabric woven with cotton warp and silk weft. Finished to give a slight rough face. -
13 Peau De Poule
A French serge in 8-shaft weave from woollen yarns and plain dyed. -
14 Peau De Singe
A French fabric made with plain or figured pile with schappe warp and cotton weft. The face has a slightly rough nap and satin back. -
15 Peau De Soie
A fancy silk cloth made on a satin base on 8 shafts. The weave effect has a rib appearance from selvedge to selvedge, and the cloth is reversible. Of French make and finish. -
16 Peau De Souris
Mouse skin, a soft finished silk, not unlike duvetyn. -
17 Peau De Suede
A woollen dress fabric, woven in check plaid designs and finished with a nap face. -
