69 guia
( guía [gía] < guiar 'to guide, lead,' a term common to all Western Romance languages; the initial consonant indicates that it is of Germanic origin, but no similar term exists in known Germanic lexicons. Corominas suggests it is from Gothic * widan 'to gather together,' since the original meaning in Romance was 'to escort someone and guarantee his safety')Bentley: 1844. Referenced by Watts as a custom pass or manifest. Blevins indicates it was a written permit to allow American merchandise into Mexico, especially during the time of the Santa Fe Trail. The DRAE provides a similar definition. Cobos references it as an invoice or a bill of lading (according to the 6ED, it is an official receipt given by the master of a merchant vessel to the person shipping the goods; the document makes the master of the vessel responsible for the safe arrival of the goods; it may be used as legal proof of ownership of goods, and may be deposited with a creditor as security for a loan). -
