Dès novembre 1995, Pascal Chartier, gérant de la librairie du Bât d’Argent (Lyon, France), crée Livre-rare-book, un site professionnel de livres d’occasion, anciens et modernes disponible en français et en anglais. Pascal Chartier considère le web comme "une vaste porte", à la fois pour lui, pour ses clients et pour ses collègues. Dès les débuts du site, un catalogue en ligne regroupe les catalogues de plusieurs librairies de la région. Il est complété par un annuaire international des librairies d’occasion. En août 2003, Livre-rare-book propose un catalogue de plus d’un million de livres émanant de quelque 320 librairies, et un annuaire électronique international recensant près de 4.000 librairies. Le catalogue comprend 2 millions de livres émanant de 500 librairies en septembre 2005, et 2,6 millions de livres émanant de 550 librairies en décembre 2006. Livre-rare-book recense aussi les affiches, gravures, cartes géographiques, cartes postales et photographies. -
71 Million Book Project
Lancé en 2000 par cinq professeurs (Jaime Carbonnel, Raj Reddy, Michael Shamos, Gloriana St Clair et Robert Thibadeau) de l’Université Carnegie Mellon (en Pennsylvanie, Etat des Etats-Unis), le Million Book Project a pour but de numériser un million de livres. Cette bibliothèque numérique est hébergée par l’Internet Archive. Les livres sont scannés puis convertis au format texte en utilisant la technologie OCR (Optical Character Recognition). Une présentation complète du projet est donnée dans la FAQ (frequently asked questions). Le Million Book Project a une optique différente du Projet Gutenberg, qui préfère ajouter l’étape de la relecture par des correcteurs, pour avoir un texte parfaitement fiable. Les collections du Million Book Project comprennent 10.500 livres en avril 2005, et sont ensuite intégrées à la section Universal Library de l’Internet Archive. En octobre 2005, l’Internet Archive débute un autre projet de grande envergure avec l’Open Content Alliance (OPA), dont les collections intègrent la section Text Archive. -
