Создавая свой человеческий капитал каждый индивидуум (обычно вначале с помощью государства и родителей) инвестирует в себя самого, оплачивая образование и приобретение квалификации. Таким образом, Ч.к. включает врожденные способности и таланты, а также образование и приобретенную квалификацию. В свою очередь, для фирмы (компании, предприятия) Ч.к. представляет собой ту часть ее совокупного капитала, которая воплощена в коллективе сотрудников фирмы, приносящих ей прибыль. Концепция Ч.к. разработана американскими учеными, лауреатами Нобелевской премии по экономике Гэри Беккером и Теодором Шульцем. Они показали, что вложения в Ч.к. могут давать высокий экономический эффект и что в последние десятилетия они все в большей степени определяют развитие экономики, прежде всего в индустриальных и постиндустриальных странах.
