(1805-1879) Гаррисон, Уильям ЛлойдЖурналист и поэт, один из руководителей аболиционистского движения [ abolition], один из основателей Американского общества борьбы с рабством [ American Anti-Slavery Society] (1833), издатель влиятельной газеты "Нью-Йорк дейли трибюн" [New York Daily Tribune]. В 1831-65 издавал еженедельник "Либерейтор" [ Liberator, The] - влиятельный орган противников рабства и смертной казни. Несмотря на угрозы и нападения, объездил страну, выступая с лекциями, заставившими многих северян изменить свое отношение к институту рабства. Одной из самых известных была его лекция в Филадельфии в мае 1838, в которой Гаррисон провозгласил: "Нам нужно моральное землетрясение!". В 1854 осуществил публичное сожжение текстов Закона о беглых рабах [ Fugitive Slave Act of 1850] и Конституции. Был пацифистом, но перед Гражданской войной [ Civil War] пересмотрел свои взгляды и горячо поддерживал Армию северян. После войны активно выступал за права женщин и индейцев, хотя и не пользовался прежней популярностью. Л. Н.
