Во мС-ДОС името на фајлот се состои од два дела; име и проширување (extension) меѓусебно разделени со точка. Името не смее да содржи повеќе од осум знаци и, покрај сите букви и бројки од тастатурата, можат да се употребат и некои знаци, како на пример, ',,(.)., - Во. макинтош окружување, фајлот може да има до 32 букви и, со исклучок на двете точки (:), можат да се користат сите знаци.
