Le HVD (holographic versatile disc) est un DVD (digital versatile disc) holographique d’une capacité théorique de 3,9 To (téraoctets), soit l’équivalent de 830 DVD classiques, et une épaisseur de 3,5 mm, au lieu des 1,5 mm habituels. Les films, photos et fichiers multimédia sont stockés en trois dimensions, avec lecture verticale des images holographiques. Le HVD pourrait remplacer à terme le DVD au normes Blu-Ray ou HD DVD (high definition digital versatile disc). Le HVD est promu par la HVD Alliance, un consortium industriel fondé en 2005. Sa commercialisation devrait débuter en 2007 à destination d’une clientèle de professionnels. -

Premier auteur de best-sellers à se lancer dans la publication numérique, Stephen King commence d’abord par distribuer en mars 2000 sa nouvelle Riding The Bullet exclusivement dans des librairies en ligne. 400.000 exemplaires sont téléchargés dans les premières 24 heures. Suite à ce succès à la fois médiatique et financier, Stephen King crée un site web spécifique pour débuter en juillet 2000 l’auto-publication électronique de The Plant, un roman épistolaire jusque-là inédit. Les chapitres paraissent à intervalles réguliers et sont téléchargeables en plusieurs formats: PDF (portable digital format), OeB (open ebook), HTML (hypertext markup language), TXT (text), etc. En décembre 2000, après la parution du sixième chapitre, Stephen King décide d’interrompre l’expérience, le nombre de téléchargements et de paiements baissant régulièrement au fil des chapitres. Le développement du papier électronique débute dès 1997. On peut le définir comme un support souple d’une densité comparable au papier plastifié ou au transparent. Ce support peut être utilisé indéfiniment et le texte changé à volonté au moyen d’une connexion sans fil. Si le concept est révolutionnaire, le produit lui-même est le résultat d’une fusion entre trois sciences: la chimie, la physique et l’électronique. Produit en pages ou en rouleaux et réutilisable indéfiniment, ce support permettra d’afficher, de modifier et d’effacer électroniquement des données. Contrairement à l’écran plat dont la consommation d’électricité épuise rapidement la batterie, le papier électronique se contente de réfléchir la lumière ambiante et ne consomme de l’électricité qu’en cas de changement du contenu (technologie bistable). Un avantage qui s’ajoutera à la souplesse du support. Plusieurs équipes travaillent à des projets différents, les plus connus étant ceux des sociétés E Ink et Nemoptic. La production de papier électronique devrait débuter en 2008 dans les usines de Plastic Logic (avec la technologie E Ink).
