Ферта, М. Герсковица, Д. Гудфеллоу было доказано обратное, что привело к появлению новой экономической антропологии; затем появились работы К. Поланьи, который предложил формалистско-субстантивистскую модель понимания общества и на ее основе отказал экономической теории в применимости к уникальным примитивным обществам; эта позиция была поддержана Дж. Дальтоном, но вызвала критику "формалистов" в лице Э. Леклера, Р. Берлинга, Г.
