Adultery (affair) — адюльтер, внебрачная связь.
Adult video — соответствующий видеопрокат (в том числе в кабинках).
Adult movie — кино для взрослых (не просто запрещенное "детям до шестнадцати", а натуральная порнография).
Adult entertainment — показ этого самого "для взрослых" живьем, т. е. стриптиз.
Adult education — а вот здесь никаких неприличных намеков (см. предыдущие выражения) нет. Это образование для взрослых, и вовсе не в той области, которую эти взрослые, надеемся, уже освоили самостоятельно.

Чтобы одно очистить, надо другое запачкать (47).Маленький комментарий из области матологической географии.Любое нормальное государство, в том числе США и Канада (здесь мы их почти не разделяем, так как в языковом отношении эти страны гораздо ближе друг к другу, чем, скажем, к Великобритании или Ямайке), в социальном отношении представляет собой слоеный пирог. Это нормально (ненормальной была невнятная социальная советская каша, в которой мы все росли). Так вот, обращаем ваше внимание на то, что в Америке социальная стратификация сопровождается и стратификацией топографической. Проще говоря, люди естественным путем поселяются в тех местах, где живут равные им по доходам и положению.Для России это вещь новая (вернее, давно забытая старая), хотя неизбежно придем к тому же. Сейчас, когда жилье не "получают", а покупают, такое расслоение у нас тоже пошло интенсивно. Продавая квартиры, строительные компании всегда подчеркивают как большой плюс то, что в новой квартире вы будете жить с близкими по социальному статусу соседями.Не будем скрывать, мы любим не только Россию, но и Канаду с США. Последние гораздо лучше, чем может показаться тому, у кого впечатление об Америке складывается в основном из общения с хамами на границе и в консульствах или из материалов газеты "Завтра" и мнений наших политических комментаторов.Впрочем, ни здесь, ни при каких-то иных обстоятельствах мы не собираемся вступать в дискуссии с теми, кто до сих пор верит, будто американцы воюют в Ираке, чтоб прибрать к рукам его нефть, что 11 сентября подстроили евреи или сами американцы, а невинно убиенная российская императрица была немецкой шпионкой. Это - гормональное.При всем при том, в Америке много и забавного, и плохого. Вот некоторые объективные цифры:• В 2002 году только в Чикаго были убиты около 600 человек.• Ежедневно полиция США задерживает 25-30 тысяч нарушителей, причем около четверти арестов связаны с алкоголем. Чаще всего это вождение в пьяном виде - D.U.I. = Driving under Influence. (Выпить за рулем там разрешается, но содержание алкоголя в крови не должно превышать норму.)• За один день американцы тратят более 10 миллионов долларов на порнографию.• 47% американских мужчин и 26% женщин считают, что секс лучше, чем деньги (при этом 16% женщин утверждают, что ни секс, ни деньги не доставляют им удовольствия).• Средняя длина полового члена американца, по мнению американских мужчин - 25 см, по мнению американских женщин - 10 см.• 23 города и поселка США носят имя города-героя Москвы.Означает ли это, что, скажем, приехавшему на работу в Штаты специалисту из России страна откроется в том неприглядном виде, в каком она показана в фильме "Брат-2"? Абсолютно нет. Ни в плане общения, ни в плане, так сказать, ландшафтов - если вы не попали случайно в какие-то специальные обстоятельства или не спускаетесь на это дно сознательно (мало ли по каким причинам, может, бандитов, как наши менты, в Америке ловите). В США хорошее от плохого (пристойное от непристойного ит.п.) в значительной степени физически отделено. И хотя границы эти официально никак не обозначены, они легко определяются визуально - только глаз должен быть наметан. Нам кажется, что эта книга будет вам в данном отношении неплохим подспорьем. Она поможет на практике определить, в каком районе (какой зоне) вы находитесь, а значит, чего там следует ожидать.Американский автор, который изучает американских маргиналов сознательно, живет в тихом спальном районе Aurora-Du Page County под Чикаго, где двери запираются чисто символически, под окнами бегают кролики, а автомобили останавливаются, чтобы пропустить переходящих дорогу жирных серых гусей. Чтобы там кто озвучил нечто из нашего словаря - ни разу такого не бывало, при том что живут там вместе и wasp'ы, и негры, и китайцы, и славяне - стратификация идет не по расовому критерию, а по поведенчески-доходному. Будешь ты там коситься на проходящего мимо негра? Да никогда! Тамошний негр - гарантированно человек порядочный (в чикагском метро ощущения будут совсем другими). А в 5 милях начинается другая часть района Аврора - Aurora-Kane County, прозванная в народе Кана Иллинойская (по аналоги с Каной Галилейской, где и Христа не пощадили). Там вечерами постреливают. В один не столь давний год настреляли столько, что по трупам на душу населения Aurora полгода держала первое место в стране. К чему мы это рассказываем? А "Не ходите, дети, в Африку гулять!". Это никакие не шутки. И если кто (не будем уточнять кто) думает, что мы американцев забьем своей крутизной и русской закалкой, так уверяем вас, что сальвадорская закалка не мягче, а то обстоятельство, что местный герой здесь вырос и всех знает, отнюдь не обременительно. В Ванкувере целая битва шла, несколько лет, между натуральной русской бандитней и Ангелами Ада (Hell's Angels), с перестрелками на улицах. Как вы думаете, кто победил?Во всех городах Северной Америки есть исторически сложившиеся районы проживания малообеспеченного, сильно пьющего, курящего и колющегося населения. В этой среде, кстати, очень сильны расовые предрассудки, поэтому они еще и на подрайоны по национальностям разделены. Людей нечистых на руку и повышенно агрессивных там хватает. Не дай вам Бог забрести в неправильный квартал! Свидетелей не бывает никогда - им же там дальше жить. В Чикаго опасный район называется South Side, в Ванкувере - East Hastings. В США большую роль в такой стратификации сыграли либеральные программы предоставления дешевого и бесплатного жилья бедным - Public Housing Projects - вот все малоприспособленные к обычной жизни и работе там и собрались. В итоге целые районы перешли под контроль преступных группировок. Отметим, что панацеи тут нет, и недавние попытки расселения и рассредоточения "неблагополучных" привели попросту к инфицированию ранее спокойных районов.Не случайно у глубокой мысли, данной в качестве эпиграфа, есть следствие: "Но можно запачкать все, ничего не очистив".Совершенно ужасны были и последствия идеи разместить университетские кампусы вблизи районов с плохой репутацией. Думали плохие места облагородить, а получили цепь изнасилований в кампусах. Мы-то с вами знаем на примере нашей армии и лагерей, что власть в бараке быстро переходит к самому отмороженному отморозку (деду). А американских политиков почему-то этой мудрости не научили, не всех, во всяком случае.Так вот, чтобы правильно ориентироваться на месте, пользуйтесь народными приметами, собранными здесь составителями. Разобраться в тонкостях впечатляющих деталей американского быта вам поможет знание многих терминов из нашего словаря, но особенно понимание вполне пристойного слова zoning (районирование).В Америке нет свободы и распущенности в русском смысле - вседозволенность. То есть они там, конечно, есть, но исключительно, как вы уже догадались, в американском смысле. Нельзя там у школы водкой торговать (и, что для них характерно, раз нельзя - не торгуют!). Но все незапрещенное разрешено. Где и какая, скажем, коммерческая деятельность допустима, определяют городские или районные власти, причем формально и строго. За порядком следят серьезно (см., например, цв. илл. (Так в Америке поддерживают порядок. Cops, типичные, на лошадках. В Канаде полиция даже Официально называется RCMP = Royal Canadian Mounted Police — Королевская Канадская Конная Полиция. А приглядывать есть за чем, это видно из других иллюстраций страницы.)), и причины понятны (см. цв. илл. (Наш перевод названия журнала — "Времена кайфа", тут и знакомое слово "pot" есть.), (Фрагмент из пародийного комикса "Fartman".)).На цв. илл. , (Верные признаки "плохих" районов: колючая проволока (хоть где-то), решетки на окнах, хмурые, озабоченные выражения на лицах (предчувствие возможности физической угрозы), надписи на стенах (граффити), объявления про что-то для взрослых и т. д. Правда, на многие наши районы похоже? Потому туристы к нам ехать и побаиваются. Если на городской улице вы увидели колючку или разрисованные стены — они тут явно неспроста. Это не Россия. В нормальном, благополучном районе такого...) - фотографии относительно "плохих" районов. Вот их описание.Если вы видите вокруг на вывесках термины из этого словаря - уверяем вас, это не случайно. Наверняка весь квартал, в котором вы находитесь, пользуется сомнительной репутацией, и помимо того, на что вы прямо смотрите, по сторонам еще много-много всякого нехорошего и разного происходит. Для проверки рекомендуем прогуляться в таком квартале по улице этак медленно, с праздным видом. К вам подойдут и озвучат несколько популярных выражений, например: "Want some action?" или: "What are you up for?" (см. action, up for). Напоминаем, что авторы не несут ответственности за последствия своих рекомендаций. Заметим также, что приведенные выше термины, хотя и не относятся к неприличным словам, на самом деле очень прямые.На вывесках предпочитают эвфемизмы. Репутацией стран распущенных в США пользуются все европейские, а особенно скандинавские и Голландия. Так что если речь не идет об этнических ресторанах, обращайте внимание на наличие на вывесках иностранной (не американской) атрибутики. В "Amsterdam Bookstore" наверняка торгуют порнографией, "Swedish massage" звучит двусмысленно и полунеприлично (см. рис. (Мы что вам рассказывали про европейские ассоциации американцев (см. Напротив, солидные заведения стараются включать в название слова American и Family - символы положительности, надежности, почитаемости протестантских (пуританских) традиций.В принципе, районы, где иностранцу надо быть внимательным, мы можем разделить на три группы.1. Безусловно опасные. Это о них мы говорили вначале - там грабят и стреляют, и могут убить просто потому, что вы не местный. Их контролируют банды, часто сгруппированные по национальному признаку, связанные с распространением наркотиков. Опознаются такие места легче всего по запущенности, обилию побитых машин и бродящих как бы без определенной цели личностей - для рабочей Америки это совершенно не характерно. Туда ходить не надо, индивидуальной защиты не предусмотрено. Полиция когда-то приедет, но может быть поздно.2. Кварталы взрослых развлечений. Тут опасность прямого нападения гораздо ниже, зато вероятны приставания с возможной последующей потерей денег, невинности и приобретением нового иммунного статуса. Особенно за кошельком смотрите! Они относительно безопасны, но "русско туристо облико морале" может быть по-настоящему поражен, войдя почти в любой бар. Плюс ко всему люди, которым не так много осталось жить, вечерами нередко выпивают больше нормы, а им потом машину водить. Вы там наверняка увидите флаги Rainbow Coalition (см. цв. илл. (Над этим временным жильем флагов сразу два. Здесь уже веселее. Слева — понятно что. Проявление патологического патриотизма американцев. Интереснее флаг справа. Часто и тротуаров нет, увидят вас идущим пешком - спросят, что случилось, не надо ли помочь. В транспорте и на дороге вы, конечно, можете встретиться с кем угодно. Американцы обычно ездят на своих собственных машинах, если не слишком далеко. Абсолютно безопасны самолеты (аэропорты) и поезда. Междугородними автобусами (Greyhound) пользуются люди небогатые. Вокруг автостанций небезопасно, но в самих автобусах и внутри автостанций ничего страшного не происходит. В Канаде общественный транспорт безопасен (неприятностей, кроме ДТП, практически не бывает), им пользуются все. В США городские автобусы и троллейбусы малоприятны, а метро может быть просто опасным, особенно вечером. Но это уже не про язык. Ощущение опасности возникает от невербального контакта - в американских гнусных местах люди ведут себя, как в России - не улыбаются, не здороваются, оглядываются и имеют озабоченный вид. Что там, мы в метро такие коммунальные скандалы наблюдали - прямо Воронья слободка!Короче говоря, welcome! Если приедете, со временем сами разберетесь.
