(1845-1924) Кеннан, ДжорджЖурналист, исследователь, знаток России. Во время Гражданской войны [ Civil War] служил военным телеграфистом. В 1865 вошел в состав экспедиции компании "Вестерн юнион" [ Western Union], изучавшей возможность прокладки телеграфа из Европы через Сибирь и Аляску (1865-67). На собачьих упряжках проделал путешествие до Санкт-Петербурга из Сибири, написав об этом книгу "Жизнь в сибирской палатке" ["Tent Life in Siberia"] (1870). В 1870-71 посетил русский Кавказ. В 1877-85 работал в "Ассошиэйтед пресс" [ Associated Press] в Вашингтоне. В 1885-86 посетил русские каторжные тюрьмы и места политической ссылки в Сибири, написав об этом работу "Сибирь и система ссылок" ["Siberia and the Exile System"] (1891). Во время испано-американской [ Spanish-American War] и русско-японской войны был военным репортером.
