Выступала в варьете, в бродвейских театрах [ Broadway], поставила несколько эпатажных пьес с откровенными сценами (ее пьесы "Секс" ["Sex"] (1926) и "Мужчина для удовольствий" ["Pleasure Man"] (1928) были сняты со сцены по цензурным соображениям, а за пьесу "Секс" в 1926 она на 10 дней попала в тюрьму "за непристойное поведение"). Автор ряда имевших широкое хождение двусмысленных изречений. Дебютировала в кино в фильме "Ночь за ночью" ["Night After Night"] (1932). Была автором сценариев ряда фильмов, в которых играла сама: "Она была к нему несправедлива" ["She Done Him Wrong"] (1933), "Мой маленький цыпленок" ["My Little Chickadee"] (1940) и др. В начале 1940-х ушла из кино. Снималась на телевидении, записывалась на пластинки, выступала на эстраде. В 1959 выпустила книгу воспоминаний "И никакой добродетели" ["Goodness Had Nothing to Do with It"]. В 1970 вновь снялась в кино в фильме "Майра Брекенридж" ["Myra Breckinridge"], а в 84-летнем возрасте - в фильме "Секстет" ["Sextette"] (1977). Ее именем военные летчики называют надувной спасательный жилет [ Mae West] (по ассоциации с пышным бюстом актрисы и по созвучию имени "Mae" с международным сигналом тревоги "Mayday", от франц "m'aidez", а фамилии со словом "vest" = "жилет") -
