Процесс, в результате которого гребень плоской волны разворачивается при ее трении о дно на мелководье. Там, где шельф широк, ровен и глубина его изменяется плавно, рефракция поверхностных волн происходит идеально правильно, так что при вступлении волн в зону прибоя их гребни становятся почти параллельными пляжу независимо от того, под каким углом они первоначально входят в прибрежные воды.
