(The waiting of Reipae)Major City in Northland. The area and harbour was used as a staging place for Maori war parties on their way south. Much of the early city, which was a trading post, was built on reclaimed swampland. Kauri timber and gum was the major trading industry, soon followed by coal mining, wheat and dairy farming, shipbuilding and brick making.
