1 Hand Dressing
The complete combing out and splitting of the flax fibres upon hand tools (hand hackling). These tools are usually (1) Rougher's hackle; (2) a finer hackle or " ten "; and (3) a still finer hackle or " switch." The " ten " consists of a beech stock 91/4-in. X 33/2-in. X 7/8-in. An area of 71/2 X 23/8-in. in the centre is set with steel pins 43/8-in. long overall and 13 B.w.g. There are often 26 pins in a row and 17 or 18 rows. The pins in one row are opposite the spaces in the preceding row (Carter). The " switch " is described under its name. -
