       Будапешт. Служащие магазина подарков «Матучек и Ко.» толпятся у входа до открытия, поскольку ни за какие блага на свете они не позволят себе опоздать и навлечь на себя недовольство патрона. Матучек, которому перевалило за 50, – честный малый, хоть и не любит возражений. Тем не менее его старейший сотрудник и старший продавец Кралик без колебаний вступает с ним в спор, когда это необходимо для пользы дела. Ференц Вадаш, человек раболепный и хитрый, всегда признает правоту хозяина. А старик Пирович, едва заслышав, что начальник начинает опрашивать мнения работников, прячется в гараже или другом месте, остерегаясь высказываться определенно.
       К Матучеку устраивается Клара Новак. Кралик признается своему другу Пировичу, что через газетное объявление завязал переписку с незнакомой девушкой. Но ему не хватает смелости с ней встретиться: он боится ее разочаровать. Кралик и Клара Новак никак не могут поладить и постоянно ссорятся по любому поводу. В то же время Кралик обнаруживает, что по каким-то причинам утратил расположение Матучека: в конце концов тот увольняет его без каких-либо объяснений. Именно в этот вечер Кралик должен был встретиться со своей корреспонденткой. Он не находит в себе смелости и отправляет вместо себя Пировича, чтобы тот передал ей записку в условленном месте встречи в кафе. Пирович узнает в девушке Клару, и Кралик, сам не будучи узнанным, сразу же отменяет поручение.
       Матучек принимает у себя детектива, нанятого для слежки за женой, и узнает, что та встречается с Ференцем Вадашем. Матучек подозревал Кралика и потому несправедливо прогнал его с работы. Потрясенный поведением жены, Матучек хочет покончить с собой, но его останавливает курьер. Матучек попадает в больницу, где лечится от депрессии, и вновь нанимает Кралика продавцом. Его первостепенная задача – выставить за дверь Вадаша. В магазине отношения между Кларой и Краликом все никак не наладятся. Приближается Рождество: магазинчик полон клиентов, и Матучек ненадолго сбегает из больницы, чтобы своими глазами взглянуть на это зрелище, столь радостное его сердцу. Клара признается Кралику, что влюбилась в него, едва устроившись на работу в магазин. Но, натолкнувшись на его безразличие, старалась любыми способами вывести его из себя. Он наконец говорит, что он и есть ее обожаемый партнер по переписке.
       ►  Как ни странно, лучшие фильмы Капры ( Это чудесная жизнь, It's a Wonderful Life) и Лубича (Магазинчик за углом), оба с Джеймсом Стюартом в главной роли, довольно мало характерны для своих создателей. Джеймс Стюарт в Чудесной жизни совсем не похож на идеологическую марионетку из фильма Мистер Смит едет в Вашингтон, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, это живой человек из плоти и крови, которому предстоит попасть в параллельный мир, пройти через скитания в реальности и за ее пределами, чтобы понять свою истину и внушить ее другим. Герои Магазинчика за углом – совсем не те принцы и маргиналы, живущие в беззаботности и роскоши, к которым нас приучил Лубич, но самые обычные люди, хрупкие, озабоченные, чье положение на работе и в личной жизни ненадежно. Сознательно или нет, оба фильма созданы под влиянием тайного великого магистра американской комедии тех лет – Лео Маккэри. В самом деле, Магазинчик, по сути своей, подчиняется системе Маккэри, где глубокие чувства и смех связаны неразрывно, а лучшей комедией становится та, что наиболее универсальна, наименее фривольна, где персонажи проявляют свою человечность с первой до последней секунды повествования.
       Чудо Магазинчика в том, что, перейдя в другой, наименее близкий им регистр, Любич и его сценарист Самсон Рафаэлсон демонстрируют ту же неотразимую виртуозность на всех стадиях работы. Превосходно завязанная интрига, тонкая и разнообразная актерская игра, весьма остро описанный социальный контекст позволили фильму сохранить молодость, хотя действие но большей части замкнуто в 4-х стенах магазинчика. И во время повторного проката в Париже, через 40 лет после премьеры, Магазинчик за углом имел огромный успех, сравнимый с успехом Бастера Китона в 60-е гг. или фильма Рагглз из Ред-Гэпа, Ruggles of Red Gap в 1968-м. Этим успехом фильм обязан конечно же таланту своих создателей, но кроме того – обстоятельствам: удивительно верному описанию непрочности социального положения героев и смутной угрозы, нависшей над их работой и над ними самими. Стоит отметить, что ни одному современному фильму не удается с такой человечностью изобразить страх общества перед безработицей.

    Large-scale horizontal water motion within an ocean. The way energy from the sun, stored in the sea, is transported around the world. The currents explain, for example, why the UK has ice-free ports in winter, while St. Petersburg, at the same latitude as the Shetland Islands, needs ice breakers. Evidence is growing that the world's ocean circulation was very different during the last ice age and has changed several times in the distant past, with dramatic effects on climate. The oceans are vital as storehouses, as they absorb more than half the sun's heat reaching the earth. This heat, which is primarily absorbed near the equator is carried around the world and released elsewhere, creating currents which last up to 1.000 years. As the Earth rotates and the wind acts upon the surface, currents carry warm tropical water to the cooler parts of the world. The strength and direction of the currents are affected by landmasses, bottlenecks through narrow straits, and even the shape of the sea-bed. When the warm water reaches polar regions its heat evaporates into the atmosphere, reducing its temperature and increasing its density. When sea-water freezes it leaves salt behind in the unfrozen water and this cold water sinks into the ocean and begins to flow back to the tropics.
